As all activities are currently on a standstill in the country due to the presidential directive that aimed at curbing the spread of the COVID 19 pandemic, education is one of the sectors that has been massively affected.
The normal academic time schedules have been affected and it will take some time for everything to normalize once the situation calms down.
However some academic institutions have been able to operate virtually and Makerere University is one of these.
The institution has even gone a step further as it is set to hold online examinations in a short time from now.
The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University, Umar Kakumba in a letter dated 14th July addressed to all college principals said that the exams will go ahead once the staff becomes well acquainted on how to conduct online exams.
The university was able to successfully complete the teaching of semester one for the academic year 2020/21 according to Kakumba.
This letter further says that the COVID 19 situation worsened after the first portion of semester one exams were done and now only have to do the next set of these exams.
A commission was reportedly set up by Kakumba’s office to determine the effectiveness of the Emergency Open Distance E-learning (ODEL) in October 2020.
All colleges were further tasked by the vice Chancellor to get ready for training on carrying out of online exams.
This training will start on the 27th of July 2021 before the exams.
“The first module (conducting online assessments and examinations using MUELE) will start on Tuesday,27th July 2021 from 9:00am to 12:00pm. The IODEL will send out an electronic form for registration. You all encouraged to participate in these trainings aimed at Making our university resilient and our academic work sustainable.” part of the letter reads.
Lecturers will be educated on how to hold online exams, using online platforms like zoom, among others during this training.
