Having had different anomalies ever since the covid 19 pandemic hit the entire globe and different businesses having to shut down, a lot of unexpected changes have taken place and these have affected every entity, academic institutions inclusive.

The latest development coming in is the postponement of the 71st graduation ceremony at the Ivory tower, Makerere University. The ceremony which usually takes place in January under the normal calendar year had to be rescheduled to March after academic institutions were opened for finalists.

The graduation ceremony that will only be accessed by PhD and master’s graduands physically, has now been extended to a further date from 18th March 2021 to 7th May 2021.

According to the Deputy Vice Chancellor for academics, Prof. Umar Kakumba the postponement was based on the request from the University ceremonies committee that asked for more time to smoothly and efficiently prepare for the ceremony.

The professor was cited as saying to the media that the University Ceremonies Committee had faced challenges and delays in the procurement of gowns.

The issue of gown procurement is one that has marred and tainted the University’s administration over time with the problem always arising during every graduation ceremony especially for the past three years.

Last year’s 70th grad was the most problematic for both the graduands and the university administration as a week prior to the grad ceremony, the university had only procured 7000 gowns compared to the 13000 gowns that were needed.

It’s said that all these anomalies arose from internal disagreements with some officials blocking the timely procurement for unknown reasons. The professor also added that the issue of research for some students was also key on the extension as some had not yet completed their theses.

One of the merriest memories one can always clamour for while studying at the prestigious Ivory tower is the ability to attend their graduation ceremony and more so on the famed Freedom square.

This is the phenomenon and has always been so since the induction of Makerere university from a college school to a tertiary institution and it’s something MUK students boast about wherever they go.

It’s like the Mecca for every MUK student who is gearing to wear the ‘crown’ and a joy for most parents as they know that their laboring in school fees has not been a disappointment since this is almost the epitome of any academic award.

This excitement is usually among the undergraduate students who majority are still young and a bachelor’s being their first highest academic document are indeed over the moon being seated in the green pastured square chatting with friends about their educational journey and where next life leads from there.

However, with the coming of covid 19 which paralyzed everything across the world, this year’s graduands of the 71st MAK graduation ceremony seem like they have been denied a once in a life moment as the University board confirmed that there won’t be a physical ceremony for the undergraduates.

The ceremony which was to be in March but postponed to May by the Makerere university council will only be graced by PhD and master’s graduands physically at the freedom square and the undergraduates will access it virtually in news confirmed by the University Senate.

The main reason for this was the large numbers of the undergraduates and in so trying to observe the Ministry of Health SOP’s a virtual ceremony was confirmed. This was much to the disappointment of these boys and girls who won’t be able to take selfies and photographs for souvenirs.

Mak undergrads

More disappointed were the MUBS undergraduates most of whom had never been to the freedom square but only heard it in tales and hoped that on their last day of campus life, they would be able to access it but unfortunately their dreams have been shattered at the end.
