The Acting Principle for Makerere University of Law Professor Christopher Mbazira has extended a leaf to the former Law students to join the Law Development Centre (LDU) for a bar course.

“This note is addressed to LLB Alumni who graduated in 2020 and 2021 and are not at the Law Development Centre but would like to apply to join the Centre. The Principal’s Office invites alumni in this category to forward their names to the Principal’s Office for processing. Emails should be sent to principales.ac.ug and should include the student’s Name, Registration No. and Year of Graduation,” the Principal communicated.

The alumni and graduates are supposed to submit the required information not later than 12th August 2021.

The classy act is aimed at bridging gaps between the graduates and LDC that have been apparently widened by the Covid-19 pandemic.

89% students who sat for Law Development Centre from Makerere University didn’t pass.

These were students from a Post Degree Diploma in legal practice this academic year.

A report showed that only 141 students(11%) passed these examinations for LDC.

According to this report, 89% of the LDC students didn’t pass compared to 56% of the students in the last academic year.

Students who qualified for the award will graduate virtually next week on Friday, June 11, 2021. For the first time in LDC’s history, the Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice is classified.

The Director of LDC, Frank Nigel Othembi, commented as to the poor performance of the students.

He blamed it on the COVID-19 pandemic and also the new online learning system that was introduced to the students in their third term.

“This is the first group of Bar Course students admitted without undergoing the pre-entry examination. A number of the students were unable to cope with the academic demands of the Bar Course,” he explained.

“The Bar Course is demanding, grueling and full time. Some students did not give it due focus. More so, a few students have incomplete results that require compilation and verification before graduation,” he added.

Lastly, he stated that, “We expect to admit and clear all ‘backlog’ students by end of AY 2021/22. Apart from the students who failed more than three of the five core subjects, who have been discontinued from the Bar Course and may apply for re-admission in a subsequent academic year, the others who have not passed outright (67%) are eligible to sit supplementary examinations (orals commencing Monday, June 14, 2021.”
