MUBS Guild Presidential candidate Walter Niwagaba was beaten to pulp on Monday after attempting to campaign to a group of people passing by at night. Walter was with two of his other colleagues who are involved in the management of his campaign. One of his campaign managers Ashraf Mutebi intimated that him  and Fayol henry were escorting Nuwagaba back to his hostel and saw a group of people approaching them. The duo then dared Niwagaba to campaign to the group of people that was headed towards their direction after a long day of Campaigns. As Niwagaba approached the group to shake hands and exchange pleasantries of conversation, he was greeted with slaps kicks and punches; Niwagaba was apparently also cut with a knife on his arm and got badly bruised by the mob. Ashraf and Fayol tried to rescue their Guild aspirant but were also beaten in the process. The thugs and hooligans then ran off and Walter who was badly injured was rushed to hospital.

Ashraf’s Niwagaba’s campaign manager’s statement below

“We were coming from Berlin from campaigning and heading to the stage where we usually hold our meetings after campaigns. So together with the president there are people who came in front of us and I myself told the president that they are voters coming to greet us as students normally do, what we thought as a handshake turned into a blows, kicks and punches on our guild aspirant,” Mutebi narrated.

By press time, Niwagaba who was left with a deep cut on the right arm besides heavy beatings on the head was receiving medical attention at Bugolobi Medical Centre in a very critical condition.

UYD candidate Awori Emmanuel ,Niwagaba’s opponent has condemned the act,by issuing out the statement below.

“An attack on a leader is an attack on his constituency. This attack was not only an attack on our brother Walter, it was an attack on us. It is for this reason that I call upon you to be strong and vigilant. Your life matters and counts.”

“I argue you to be security conscious. Do not move alone much less move in the silent night. Our Hostel areas are not safe enough for us to move freely.”

Niwagaba, who was expected to appear at a massive rally today, failed, because he sustained several injuries, including stab wounds.

The MUBS police are currently investigating the matter and hunting for Niwagaba’s attackers, on top of deploying heavily for the election slated for tomorrow.

Kato Paul’s interview with Campustrendz

Who is Kato Paul?

Kato Paul is a second year student at Makerere University doing a bachelors of arts in education majoring in history and geography I am the official flag bearer of forum for democratic change and a resident of Mitchell.

I’ve been a leader the whole of my school life notably I was head prefect Lubiri 2013-2014 Debate club president same year, secretary general Uganda National Students Association. UNSA 2013-2014.in O-level I was chairperson candidates in Fort portal SS, Head Boy in P6 St. Theresa primary school.

What inspired you to join politics?

My Dad has been a great inspiration to my political life , by the time I  came to be a standing person, He was an RC III for 10 years by that time Resistance Council Chairman , which is now referred to as Local council chairman LCIII. He was Saza chief, LC V councilor he used to move along with me, take me to his meetings to see other and interact with his fellow politicians so I looked up to him and I admired him and I really took up the interest in politics.

Up till now I still learn a lot of things from him he still advices me he knows how to speak, what to speak and when and where to speak. He is articulate in speech a very good public speaker, acquainted with skills of conflict resolution, he’s good at associating with people and it has earned him very many friends and a lot of attachment and I’ve really learned a lot from him.

How does it feel to be FDC flag bearer?

Being flag bearer of FDC a party I have always loved and supported myself its quite outstanding and I am honored its quite incredible,  I think I’ll try my level best to move this party a step forward and become guild president.

Kato Paul along side Wanyera who recently gave him support

Most important thing you can pick out of your manifesto,

The plight of Makerere student has not changed, we have problems we’ve experienced for a good number of years, in terms of security and sanitation e.g. in our halls of residence the toilets are poorly maintained, dilapidated and the water supply is also inadequate. Issues of missing marks are like a song, we have issues of congestion. The other time I got surprised when a my friend took me to the Bachelors of commerce external class they are having lectures in slum in a church in kikumi kikumi they pay tuition they are students ,they are supposed to be treated like other students when it rains where do these people pass. We don’t need temporary solutions

Conclusion it’s high time Makerereans made a right decision and woke up to our call, I’ve always told my friends we shouldn’t look for a old woman in the village who has gotten lost and yet there is a hyena spitting grey hair, we should not look for a leader yet a competent Kato Paul has presented himself. Let us take up Kato Paul because he has been tried he has been tested all we need is a benefit of doubt.

Uganda opposition leader and former presidential aspirant Col Dr Kizza Besigye was blocked from attending the requiem mass of the slain Assistant Inspector General of Police Andrew Felix Kaweesi. Dr Besigye was from Ankara Magistrates court for harmonization of his bail extension and routine mention of his treason case.
Besigye’s claims have been confirmed from Uganda’s main opposition FDC Party officials. The Opposition party’s Deputy Secretary General Harold Kaija, claims Besigye was stopped by police officers from proceeding to attend the mass.

“Even in death Kaweesi has blocked Besigye from attending his requiem Mass. We judge them by their fruits,” he claimed.

“I am not surprised. These are the officers trained by Kaweesi and commanded by Kayihura. Together with Museveni these are very dark souls and we are judging the trio by their fruits.”

The mass at the cathedral was attended by very many notable figures among them was former Presidential Candidate John Patrick Amama Mbabazi.

On the day that AIGP Kaweesi was shot dead by unidentified people outside his home, Dr Besigye sent out a condolence message and appealed to government to bring in foreign experts to probe the crime.

Besigye also described the former Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander as clever, a quick thinking and empathetic police officer, who he said was entrapped in the ruling government.

“STRONG WOMAN: She may be the wife of Uganda’s strongest opposition leader, but there is more that defines Winnie Byanyima. This woman is the role model you want for all your children; she is very intelligent, a go-getter, aggressive and ambitious and she will stand up when things are not going right.” …Sqoop Uganda.

Biography

Winifred “Winnie” Byanyima is a Ugandan-born aeronautical engineer, politician, and diplomat. She is the executive director of Oxfam International, to which she was appointed in May 2013.

Background

She was born in Mbarara District in the Western Region of Uganda. As a little girl, Winnie Byanyima was the loudest among her siblings. She argued about everything, from school work, to the house work. Come playtime, she climbed trees and sometimes went along with herdsmen to graze and milk the cattle.
The rural people thought education was making her big-headed. But she, on the other hand, did not see anything wrong with speaking out her mind. By the time she joined university, she was the talk of the town. Some of the conservative villagers saw her as a snobbish girl who did not want to listen to her elders. “Everyone was saying her father had spoilt her, but that was simply Winnie,” says a close family friend.

Education

Born on January 1, 1957 to Boniface and Gertrude Byanyima, Winnie has five other siblings Edith, Anthony, Martha, Abraham and Olivia. She attended St. Hellen’s Primary School before joining Mt. St. Mary’s Namagunga for her O’level.
She later proceeded to King’s College Budo for A’level, before joining the University of Manchester for a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering. With a first class degree, she became the first female Ugandan to become an aeronautical engineer.

Professional career

Following the completion of her training as an aeronautical engineer, Byanyima worked as a flight engineer for Uganda Airlines. When Yoweri Museveni started the 1981–1986 Ugandan Bush War, Byanyima left her job and joined the armed rebellion. Museveni and Byanyima had been raised together at the Byanyima household as children, with the Byanyima family paying for all Museveni’s education and scholastic needs.

Museveni, Byanyima, and her husband Kizza Besigye were combatants in the National Resistance Army (NRA) during that war. Though both Byanyima and her husband have since fallen out with the Ugandan president because of his repressive undemocratic rule despite his earlier stated convictions.

After the NRA won that war, Byanyima served as Uganda’s ambassador to France from 1989 until 1994. She then returned home and became an active participant in Ugandan politics. She served as a member of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the 1995 Ugandan Constitution. She then served two consecutive terms as a member of parliament, representing Mbarara Municipality from 1994 until 2004. She was then appointed director of the Directorate of Women, Gender and Development at the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She served in that capacity until she was appointed as director of the Gender Team in the Bureau for Development Policy at UNDP in November 2006.

In January 2013, Byanyima was announced as the next executive director of Oxfam International, replacing Jeremy Hobbs. Byanyima began her five-year directorship at Oxfam on 1 May 2013.

In January 2015, Byanyima co-chaired the World Economic Forum in Davos. She used the forum to press for action to narrow the gap between rich and poor. The charity’s research claims that the share of the world’s wealth owned by the richest 1 percent of the world population had increased to nearly 50 percent in 2014, whereas 99 percent shares the other half. Oxfam’s figures are strongly contested by several economists.

In November 2016, Byanyima was appointed by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to the High-Level Panel on Access to Medicines, co-chaired by Ruth Dreifuss,

former President of Switzerland, and Festus Mogae, former President of Botswana.

Personal details

Byanyima is married to political opposition figure Kizza Besigye, the former chairman of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) political party in Uganda. They are the parents of one son named Anselm. Byanyima is a member of the FDC, although she has significantly reduced her participation in partisan Ugandan politics since she became a Ugandan diplomat in 2004.

Inset: Winnie Byanyima hangs out with American music star Will.I.Am, this was at 47th Annual World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
