Kyambogo university management has reported and filed a report on how students have created new ways of cheating during examinations.

Students are using tricks and hiding answer sheets in their face masks and undergarments according to a report published by the Daily Monitor.

Furthermore, the Vice Chancellor of Kyambogo University Professor Eli Katunguka also confirmed that girls hide papers in their undergarments.

“I have been told that ladies are now putting notes in their knickers in the form of sanitary towels. When one attempts to check them, they allege that those are pads,” the professor added.

These remarks were made while the Chancellor met with the Muslim community addressing the issue of the police officer unveiling the female student at the checkpoint before entering the exam room.

“Students are taking advantage of Covid-19 to cheat exams because they know no one will ask them to remove the masks when entering examination rooms,” added the professor.

“Students are no longer using their old tricks of cheating. The popular one was writing notes on their thighs. They are now using new tricks to cheat exams and as University administrators, we are aware of all these,” he said.

Prof Katunguka said the university has deployed female security officers to ensure that students of the same gender are checked everywhere.

He said according to the university rules, a string of sanctions ranging from suspension to dismissal can be put on offenders.

The coming of Covid-19 brought more harm than good since there is a high rise of unemployment in the country at the moment.

Different graduates have resulted to being innovative to survive the wave.

Frank Ngambeki, a bachelor’s degree graduate in Guidance and Couselling from Kyambogo University is one of the few people who have decided to think out of the box.

He decided to being selling ladies’ leggings with a friend having failed to get a job after graduation.

“After graduating in 2021, I looked for a job and failed to get one. In 2015, I decided to join my friend who was selling ladies’ leggings. We started with a capital of Shs300,000 and now earn Shs40,000 to shs50,000 a day,” Ngambeki said.

But with the Education sector crippled due to the post-Covid 19 effects, the 29-year-old saw an opportunity and started up a daycare centre for the children of his neighbours to supplement his income.

“I now have a daycare centre at home where parents around here leave me with their kids in the morning and pick them in the evening. I don’t provide them food because the parents bring them with their food,” said Ngambeki.

Ngambeki charges Shs 5000 per kid a day and he is now looking after six kids.

Over 200 students from Kyambogo University have petitioned the High Court following the absence of their names on the forthcoming graduation list. This 17th Graduation Ceremony is set to happen on the 21st of this month.

The students who are being represented by their lawyer Bwiire Ronald claim that the university omitted their names from the graduation list.

This was done despite the fact that they had done all their exams and passed with their names pinned on the University notice board.

Lawyer Bwire asked the Court to stop the upcoming Graduation ceremony until the University sorts out the graduation list so that all students who are eligible for graduation are not left behind.

Furthermore, he said that the students should be given an opportunity to show their evidence and prove that they are due to be part of the graduation ceremony.

“My Clients’ futures will be affected especially when it comes to employment opportunities because they can not seek employment anywhere if they do not graduate,” Lawyer Bwire stated.

He adds that the students brought the matter before the University’s administration but are now seeking Court intervention since the University declined their claim.

He wants the court to stop or issue an order restraining further arrangements regarding the coming graduation until the University compiles a proper list with all names of students who are eligible to graduate on the 21st of this month included.

Students from Kyambogo University are puzzled after learning that their property was sold off to recover hostel outstanding balances by different hostel owners in Banda.

According to the University Hostels Association (UHA) Chairperson, Ssematovu Hakim, hostels like; Good shepherd, Kabbojja, Jussy, Wamala and Servite are the hostels which have already sold off students properties under the guidance of local leaders.

“The selling off of these properties was done authoritatively under the guidance of the LC1, LC5 and the Guild. Some of the valuable items you left behind have been sold off to clear your dues as you all know we charge per semester and it is noted that your periodic semester was accomplished,” Ssematovu said in a letter.

“Yes I saw the letter, as well as, landlords were breaking rooms and removing properties. But not sure whether they were to be sold,” disclosed an anonymous student.

It should be recalled that President Yoweri Museveni ordered for closure of all learning institutions in Uganda as a quick measure to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Some students left items like mattresses, suitcases, laptops, textbooks among others due to high transport fares.

Kyambogo University students are having concerns on the numbers of retakes that are registered especially from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

According to the information shared, students were introduced to a new portal that isn’t essential to them.

The portal doesn’t doesn’t display information for different students like marks and giving retakes to students inevitably.

Furthermore, the course units and modules are also said it disappear prior to students being added to the system.

According to Akiiki Iryne, a Kyambogo University Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences finalist confirmed that the university portal is accessable by anyone and can easily be hacked.

“There is a considerable number of issues with the new portal. The portal does not reflect the actual marks. If one had a 60 now he is likely to be having a retake. Retakes are too many on our portals as if that is not enough students do not have their full marks. Some course units have disappeared completely and yet students were added course units they didn’t do”, emphasized Iryne.

“For instance a student who does sociology and social administration in the arts and social science course is not supposed to have economic political science or psychology but students have such course units in a mixture of one course. Above it all the portal is too open so long as one knows your registration number that’s all hence it become easy for hackers to do what they can.” she added.

Another student finalist from Kyambogo University who chose to stay anonymous said she had the same issue as she couldn’t access her portal and marks had vanished. She also added that she cleared all her fees but the university was demanding her to pay that exact amount.

“My portal at first before it was messed up with results issues it was showing that my current academic year was 3 sem 1 and it was appearing twice, that was my first problem and it was showing that they are demanding me functional fees yet I had paid.” A Kyambogo University student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences revealed.

“The portal is now blocked. Before it was blocked I had accessed it and my marks were messed up I even took screenshots. They gave me wrong marks in some two papers then I was also given two papers that I do not offer and one is a retake. In research designs I had 76 but was given 73.” The student added.

Many graduands from the mentioned faculty are complaining after course units were deleted from their portals yet graduation preparations are in final phase for other faculties.

Eight students coming from Kyambogo University have been arrested by the police for starting a protest against online learning today morning.

This protest was organised by guild members of the university who helped mobilise the other students to show their dissatisfaction as stated by the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, ASP Luke Oweyisigire.

The students wanted the online learning to be stopped on allegations for it being too costly for them to manage. They were suggested the semester be extended to the current semester.

However, the police and university authorities made this decision to curb in because they were trying preventing the spread of the deadly COVID-19 following the discovery of 8 cases in the university this week.

In a statement, KMP deputy spokesman Luke Owoyesigire said that the students became unruly, prompting police to disperse them to bring the situation under control.

“We have, however, managed to arrest eight students. They include; Kato Eriasa, Kasozi Bright, Namara Claire, Nkurunziza Alphonse, Malingumu Ivan, Ssali Geoffrey, Waiswa Calvin and Mbazira John,” Owoyesigyire said.

“They have been charged with inciting violence. They are detained at Jinja Road Police Station as investigations continue,” added the spokesperson.

In a phone interview, Professor Eli Katunguka Rwakishaya, the Vice-Chancellor of the university said that the Open Distance and E-learning system that the students are protesting against is recommended by the Government of Uganda.

Professor added that students who claim they cannot manage the system because of a lack of smartphones should not blame it on the university.

“Students should look for all means possible to adhere because the COVID-19 situation is worsening and students cannot keep meeting physically,” adds Vice-Chancellor Katunguka.
